With the Hawk and Owl Trust we need to be prepared for breaking news at any hour, and the plight of this Peregrine Falcon family has really put that to the test this month.
At 4am on Saturday 3 May, the Hawk and Owl Trust captured the moment that the first Peregrine Falcon chick hatched at Norwich Cathedral. Minutes later, the chick was enjoying its first meal, again captured on camera.
Within 45 minutes of being alerted to the news, we had shared a release, video clip, and images with our media contacts.
Footage appeared on BBC Look East news bulletins, BBC Countryfile online, regional media and we helped prepare a spokesperson for a BBC Radio Norfolk interview.
However, excitement turned to sadness when the team realised that a third chick, which had hatched two days later, didn’t survive – possibly due to the unseasonably high temperatures at the moment.
We know how much time, care and passion everyone at the Hawk and Owl Trust puts into these birds and the project, and we’re ready to respond and share news from the Trust whatever course nature decides to take.
